The Healthcare Growth Playbook
By Karren Hodge · Healthcare marketing & strategy

Access isn’t the outcome. Adoption is.

Most healthcare organizations stop at access. I’ve spent 10+ years across health plans, diagnostics, digital health and virtual care working on what happens next: getting members, patients and providers to actually act.

The Framework

Four stages between a covered benefit and real growth

Each stage has its own levers, owners and metrics. Each one below comes with a result from my own work.

1 Coverage

Access

The benefit exists and people are eligible. Necessary, but it is only the starting line.

2.8M members’ network access restored in an award-winning health plan campaign
2 Awareness

Activation

The people who influence use (benefits managers, referring providers, sales teams) know it and can explain it.

6,000+ benefits managers equipped through a partner enablement toolkit
3 Behavior change

Adoption

Providers change how they order and patients take the first step. This is the hardest gap to close.

50% growth in physician adoption of an FDA-cleared diagnostic
4 Sustained use

Retention

Use keeps going after launch, and that is when the value to members and revenue actually show up.

40% utilization growth in six months at a virtual care leader
About Karren

A journalist’s instinct for the story, a marketer’s focus on the numbers

I started in journalism and public relations, and that still shapes how I work: find the real story, then make complex healthcare products and clinical science make sense to the people who have to act on them.

Since then I’ve worked in virtual care, behavioral health, FDA-cleared diagnostics and national health plan partnerships. Again and again I saw the same gap: the benefit existed, but people didn’t use it.
